Painting in Trecento Italy: The Age of Giotto

This module follows the development of 14th-century painting in Italy, starting with artistic innovations in Rome and Assisi. The module focuses on the paintings of leading artists Giotto, Duccio and their contemporaries and followers in Siena, Florence and Padua. Key topics include the sources of stylistic change, technical innovation in the production of art and the relationship of modes of visual production to changing political and ideological imperatives both religious and secular. A gallery visit to the National Gallery is included.
