Art and Philosophy

This module provides an introduction to key themes and debates in the philosophy of art from Plato to postmodernism, but with a particular focus on modernity and modernism. Why is art a philosophical problem? Does art need philosophy to be experienced fully? We will examine the ways in which philosophy has interacted with, and challenged, art practice and criticism. Working from specific artworks and selected texts, we shall consider classical thought, aesthetics, psychoanalysis, critical theory, to deconstruction and contemporary art theories.
