Overview

Our Quantitative Economic Methods fast-track short course, offered with both online and on-campus teaching, gives you the opportunity to examine a wide range of quantitative techniques in conjunction with some key economic principles. It will give you essential quantitative grounding if you are considering taking a degree in pure economics or finance.

For this intensive course you will usually be expected to have completed Economic Principles prior to enrolment, as we assume knowledge of basic economics. You must also have some command of mathematics.

By the end of the course, you will have the competence to apply mathematical and statistical techniques to economic problems.

Teaching is through a combination of lectures, seminars and class presentations, either individually or in groups, and topics include:

  • Economic applications of graphs and equations
  • Differentiation
  • Uses of the derivative in mathematics and economics
  • Differentiating exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Financial mathematics
  • Integral calculus: indefinite and definite integrals
  • Descriptive statistics
  • Probability and probability distributions
  • Normal distribution
  • Confidence intervals
  • Hypothesis testing

This innovative short course gives you the freedom and flexibility to decide how you wish to attend each class: either online or on campus. You simply register for this course and decide on each day of classes which you prefer, without needing to notify us beforehand. Our Saturday classes consist of both a practical session and a lecture.

The course is assessed by two 1500-word assignments (10% each), weekly quizzes (50%) and a two-hour in-class test (30%).

This can be taken as a standalone short course or as a part of:

30 credits at level 4
