What's on during Orientation

Orientation is designed to give you the best start to life at Birkbeck.

After you have your place at Birkbeck, you will receive an invite to your programme induction event and to the Birkbeck Orientation Day. We strongly encourage you to attend both events, to get the best overview of life at Birkbeck and ensure that you’re as prepared as possible for the start of term.

Programme inductions

Most programme inductions will take place between 23 and 27 September. The inductions will give an overview of how the programme will be run, and the options available to you. Just as importantly, they will be a good chance for you to meet your new classmates and the lecturers and administrative staff in your department.

Study skills workshops

Get Ahead

Birkbeck’s Get Ahead study skills workshops run throughout September 2019, and are a chance to get a head start on your university studies before term begins.

Workshops are open to all students. Whether you’re an undergraduate or postgraduate, new to academia, or returning after a break, these workshops offer you an overview of the skills you need to reach your academic potential.

In addition to the general study skills workshops, we run the Academic Writing Toolkit workshops, which focus on academic writing skills.

There are eight workshops in total in the Get Ahead and Writing Toolkit series. All workshops repeat several times to give students a number of opportunities to attend.

Academic Writing Toolkit workshops

Other study skills

In addition to the Get Ahead programme in September, Birkbeck Study Skills run workshops throughout the academic year. Details and booking links can be found in the Events section of your My Birkbeck page.

In addition, you will find workshop resources in the Birkbeck Study Skills Moodle module (login required), online study skills guides on our Online Tutorials page.

Freshers' Fair

The Birkbeck's Students' Union Freshers' Fair is taking place at the same time as Birkbeck orientation, on Saturday 28 September. Register for orientation and you will also have the opportunity to attend the Freshers' Fair, join clubs and societies, and see what the Students' Union has in store for you. It's a great way to make friends and make the most of being a student.
