Studentship for MA Medical Humanities: Bodies, Cultures and Ideas

The Department of History, Classics and Archaeology and the Department of English, Theatre and Creative Writing at Birkbeck are offering one fully funded studentship for the MA Medical Humanities: Bodies, Cultures and Ideas starting in October 2020.

This studentship is funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Value of award

  • The award will cover UK/EU tuition fees, a London-weighted stipend at UK Research Council rates and a generous research allowance.

Eligibility criteria

  • This studentship is open to all applicants to the MA Medical Humanities: Bodies, Cultures and Ideas and will be awarded on the basis of both financial and academic merit.
  • UK and EU students are eligible to apply.
  • You are expected to meet the entry requirements for MA study within the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology and the Department of English, Theatre and Creative Writing. 
  • This studentship is not open to applicants to the MA Applied Medical Humanities.

How to apply

  • We particularly encourage applications from candidates with proposed research projects that look beyond the boundaries of Europe. Please submit your application by emailing the following to Adam Whittock:
    • a full CV
    • a 500-word statement of research, detailing plans for your dissertation project: this should include attention to the following:
      • the project’s methodological and scholarly foundations
      • the project’s academic importance
      • why the project is a good fit for Wellcome funding
      • discussion of the project’s potential non-academic impact and scholarly outputs
    • a 250-word personal statement outlining your interest in the Medical Humanities, as well as your suitability for, and reasons for taking, the MA Medical Humanities
    • a sample of your own academic writing of no more than 2500 words: this may be one or more undergraduate essays or dissertation chapters.
    • the name and contact details of an academic referee who is able to comment on your suitability for MA study.
  • You must also complete an application for a place on the MA Medical Humanities programme either before, or at the same time as, applying for this funding.
