A quick guide to graduation: what happens on the day?

We will email you full instructions about your Graduation ceremony in advance of the day, but here is a quick guide.

Before the ceremony

  • Collect your tickets and gown: you will need to collect your tickets and gown (if you have pre-ordered one) on the day from the Royal National Hotel, which is five minutes' walk from Russell Square Tube station. Your tickets will not be posted to you. Ede and Ravenscroft staff will be on hand to help you dress and look your best.
  • Take your seat: your ceremony will be held at Senate House, which is five minutes' walk from the Royal National Hotel. You and your guests should be seated in the hall at least half-an-hour before the ceremony's advertised start time.
  • Timings: when making travel plans, please take into allowance the time needed to get to the Royal National Hotel, collect your ticket and gown (bearing in mind that the hotel gets very busy), have any photographs taken and then walk to Senate House and find your seat in the venue.

During the ceremony

  • The ceremony begins: the Master, the President, the College Orator, the Registrar and invited academics from your school will enter the hall in a formal procession.
  • Presentation of graduates: you will find your name on a card on your chair and you bring this with you when you process. Our ushers will get you up out of your seat and line you up beside the stage. Once your name has been read out, you walk across the stage and shake hands with the Master and the President before returning to your seat. If you do not wish to shake hands, please hold your Graduation Ceremony programme in both hands when going up.
  • Speeches: all Graduation ceremonies include speeches and many include the formal presentation of a new Fellow to the College.
  • Duration: each ceremony lasts around 60 minutes.

After the ceremony

  • Reception: our ushers will guide you and your guests out of the hall and into the reception venue.
  • After the reception: you will need to return your gown to Ede and Ravenscroft.
