BA History and MA Classical Civilisation / Senior Management Information Officer
What did you picture yourself doing after your course?
I considered becoming a teacher, as I always wanted to try and give something back to the community. I’ve also always been interested in data analysis – I did some when I was studying anthropology. But I didn’t really know how to combine the two elements.
What was your experience of Birkbeck Talent?
After I had registered with Birkbeck Talent, I was invited to a recruitment insight event about a Senior Management Information Officer role with Hounslow Council. I wasn't aware this kind of role existed – so the event was really helpful to find out more about what the role involved, and learn about the application process.
How did you find the application process?
Birkbeck Talent were brilliant – really friendly and informative. I never imagined I would get so much support when trying to find a job. Tubah was there to answer any questions I had before and during the application process. She even followed up with me a few times after I got the job which I really appreciated.
Tell us about your role as a Senior Management Information Officer
I am responsible for statistical analysis of information relating to vulnerable groups in Hounslow. I’m currently working with Hounslow Virtual School, who deal with children placed all around the country. As well as getting them the right education, they work with these children to make sure that they get all the best opportunities possible.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
An astronaut! But I knew there was lots of maths involved, and that wasn’t so appealing to me back then at school.
Well you’ve obviously come to terms with numbers now! What’s the best thing about your job?
The feel good factor. People think that data analysis is just about numbers, but it’s more about getting to know the people behind the numbers. When I get great news about one of the children, or about something they’ve achieved it’s a wonderful feeling. I also work with an amazing group of people who are really passionate about what they do.
How has studying at Birkbeck helped you in your new job?
This is such a difficult thing to quantify! The impact from Birkbeck has been huge. Coming from a different country, my literacy skills have vastly improved which of course helps me to write my reports at work; but that’s just the start of it. Every bit of knowledge and support from my lecturers and the passion from the other students has been wonderful. I would never have been able to get where I am without them.
Would you recommend Birkbeck Talent to other students/alumni?
Definitely! Having somebody professional believing that you can succeed can really help you along the way, and give you a huge boost of confidence.
