PhD Sport and the Business of Football
Giambattista Rossi was drawn to Birkbeck because of its excellent reputation for the specialist subject of sport business. Having already completed an Economics degree at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in his native Italy and an MSc in Sports Studies at Stirling University in Scotland, he was eager to combine his interests. Giambattista said: 'I wanted to link my passion for economics with my interest in sport as an industry, and Birkbeck was the ideal place to do that because of its Sport Business Centre.'
His PhD explored the international labour market of professional athletes, including their pay and job prospects. Contacts made through Birkbeck’s Sport Business Centre helped him arrange placements to conduct his research in Spain for one year and Switzerland for another. He also established contacts with UEFA and FIFA thanks to the support of Sean Hamil, one of the Directors of Birkbeck’s Sport Business Centre. The world of footballers and football agents features heavily in his research interests since he completed his PhD in January 2012.
Living in London while he was writing up his research was also an attraction for the Italian from Verona. He said: 'The international dimension of London is very difficult to find elsewhere. As well as Birkbeck, you are close to other great universities and can build your network of friends.'
From September 2012, Giambattista will be a senior lecturer in sport management at the Royal Docks Business School, University of East London. He added: 'My time at Birkbeck was very important in getting my new position as a senior lecturer. It was a great achievement to get a university job. If you say the University of London, it is recognised internationally. A PhD made in the UK gives you those presentation skills, self-esteem and an ability to interact with people. I am more confident now.'
