Chloe Brunton-Dunn

MA Arts Policy and Management / Digital Archive Coordinator

Why did you choose to study at Birkbeck?

I am studying over a 2 year period part time and in the evening - which means I can work full time during the day. I also chose Birkbeck because of the MA Arts Policy and Management programme; the structure and the different modules that I could choose from appealed to me.

Why did you register with Birkbeck Talent?

I found it really difficult to find a job because I’m still studying and have gone straight from BA to MA, but I needed to work to support myself. I hoped that Birkbeck Talent might have roles that I wouldn’t have found myself and would also be able to actively put me forward for roles that were relevant to my course. They did both of these things for me, and got me a paid internship which has now become a permanent contract!

How would you describe your experience of the Birkbeck Talent service?

I felt like the staff really tried to help me, which I was really grateful for. They actively tried to find a relevant role for me, and it was one I wouldn't have come across myself while job searching. Birkbeck Talent were really supportive, and I’m thankful that I now have a role that’s interesting, and relates to Arts Management.

What does your role entail, and how do you feel it furthers your career?

I feel like I've learned a lot. As Digital Archive Coordinator I've learnt more about digitisation, and creating databases. Also it’s given me more experience of working within an office environment, which I have found that employers really look for.

It has also provided me with experience in Communications, which is invaluable as I am hoping to develop a career in the Communications sector. It’s provided me with a good chunk of experience on my CV, and also new references for when I move on. In addition, I have enjoyed working with great colleagues and juggling a full time job and part time degree has taught me very good organisation and time management skills!

Would you recommend Birkbeck Talent to other students/alumni?

I think all students should register with Birkbeck Talent as they have a lot to gain! Especially for the Arts and in the current climate, students need make the most of all the opportunities that they can to enhance their career.

Working a full-time job and studying at the same time must be challenging! Do you find time for anything else?

Of course – I ran the London Marathon 2016! It was for a great charity called Whizz-Kidz who do brilliant work to transform the lives of disabled children across the UK, supporting them to become confident and independent young adults by providing wheelchairs, equipment, support groups and more.
