Certificate of Higher Education HEIS – Nursing, Midwifery and Health Studies Pathway

'I really wanted to retrain in nursing, but I was working full-time, so there was no way I could have done a full-time access course.

'Birkbeck’s evening modules fit around my daily routine, and I was very happy that I could gain a University of London qualification, as I knew that would be recognised wherever I go. Doing the certificate was great preparation for going on to do a BSc degree.

'I would definitely recommend Birkbeck because it provides you with a highly recognised qualification, great teaching and support, and excellent facilities.

I was working in customer services but really wanted to retrain in nursing. My sister-in-law was studying science at Birkbeck and when she told me that you can take modules that fit around your daily routine I decided to have a look and see what Birkbeck could offer me.  I was working full-time so there was no way I could have done a full-time access course. I checked the website and liked what I saw.

'I was very happy that I could gain a University of London qualification as I knew that would be recognised wherever I go. Lectures started at 6.00 so it was easy for me to get to college from work and there was a choice of venues in central London and in Stratford.  The level of teaching at Birkbeck is excellent and it has great facilities - I used the library and online resources and the computer rooms a lot.

'When it came to paying for the course Birkbeck also provided the flexibility that I needed. I paid for some modules up front but with others I was able to spread the cost and pay in instalments so Birkbeck made it easy.

'The process of applying for the course was very straight forward. I haven’t been in education for a long time but I knew that I wanted to do nursing. This course gave me so much confidence that I knew that I could get the qualification that I needed to achieve this. I was quite daunted about going back in to a class room and especially about writing essays. However before the class started we had an induction and when I met other students and realised that we were all in the same boat it gave me a lot of confidence.  And the support was there when I needed it. Before I started my studies I was really apprehensive but once I got going I realised that Birkbeck suited me perfectly and now I’m where I want to be.

'There was excellent module content and great choice. The first module I did was ‘approaches to study’ and this gave me the skills I needed to get through the course. It taught me how to read things so that I get the most out of them, how to do research and write essays – skills which I’ve been able to use on the undergraduate course that I’m studying now.  Doing the certificate was great preparation for going on to do a BSc.  Because it is taught at the same level as the first year of an undergraduate programme I knew that I would be well prepared to do my degree study.

'The lecturers were great and were very supportive of the fact that I was trying to juggle a lot of things in my life. They always made sure that you understood everything before they moved on.  I found that all the staff at Birkbeck were very approachable and extremely helpful.  There was a great range of people on the course which added to the enjoyment of studying. The lecturers provided a variety of teaching methods to suit different learning styles.

'I chose to complete my certificate in a year and this worked really well for me. However the course is flexible and you can choose to spread your studies over two years if you want to. Because it’s a modular course you can just try one module and see if you like it before you commit to do a full certificate and this really suited me.  I would definitely recommend Birkbeck to other people because it provides you with a highly recognised qualification and the teaching and facilities are excellent.'
