BA Geography & Environment

'A very good friend of mine did a History of Art degree at Birkbeck. At the time I was teaching adult literacy and beginning to think that I wanted to change careers. I thought having a degree would help me with that, and not having a previous degree I knew I wanted to do one.

'I attended an open evening at Birkbeck and spoke to the Department of Geography and also some of the past students who highly recommended the College. The staff at Birkbeck were very understanding of working and studying at the same time, and very supportive. I had a lifelong love of being ‘green’ and an interest in climate change, which is why I enrolled on the Geography and Environment course.

'The disability student support services at Birkbeck were fantastic and really helped support me and keep me going. I can’t praise them highly enough.

'I made friends at Birkbeck and am still in touch with the first person I met on my first induction day at Birkbeck. Everybody is very supportive because most people are in the same boat.

'My final year dissertation looked at whether the recycling symbols in packaging played a role in people sorting their kerbside recycling.

'I know studying at Birkbeck has changed me for the better, I’m a different person to five years ago. I think I’m more analytical, I make better connections between things.  I’m a more rounded person.'
