Postgraduate Support Fund for Postgraduate Research Students

Thanks to a generous donation from the estate of Ms Evelyn Pullin, together with other anonymous benefactors, the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy (SSHP) is delighted to announce the establishment of a Postgraduate Support Fund for postgraduate research students.

New and existing postgraduate research students within SSHP are invited to apply for financial assistance for research-related costs. This includes:

  • expenses associated with specific training needs
  • fieldwork or research trips
  • conferences, workshops or other academic events where the applicant is presenting a paper or chairing a session.

Please note that you cannot use the award for purchasing books or computer software/hardware.

You should discuss with your supervisor(s) what conferences might be useful for you to attend, well in advance of the conference (to allow time between application for funds and the conference deadlines).

Awards will not be approved in excess of £500 per student per academic year (October to September). Expenses should normally be claimed within the academic year of the award.

You are expected to have already used alternative sources of funding available to you (for example, departmental allowances, allowances that are part of ESRC, AHRC or other externally-funded studentships, or other College awards and bursaries).

How to apply

Please complete an application form. Note that a supporting statement from your primary supervisor is required; this can either be appended to your application or forwarded separately.

Applications will be judged on an individual basis by a School-level committee convened for this purpose and applicants will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible after the deadline.

When to apply

There are two deadlines: 18 November 2019 and 18 May 2020.

Queries and applications should be emailed to us.

Please note that original receipts (not credit card slips) will be required for any reimbursement claim so these should be retained.  Payment will be made only for eligible expenses in line with College financial regulations. You must make a claim within 3 months of the original payment.
