Funding for research students


The School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy offers an invigorating educational experience built upon our international reputation for research and teaching excellence. Our PhD students are part of a community of more than 200 doctoral students based in the heart of Bloomsbury, London’s intellectual quarter. They receive one-on-one supervision from leading scholars and benefit from world-class teaching and research training. Birkbeck PhDs go on to academic positions in leading universities worldwide and excel in a variety of professional fields.

The School offers fully funded postgraduate research opportunities each year, including ESRC and AHRC studentships, the SSHP Postgraduate Research Scholarship and the Bonnart Trust PhD scholarship. Please check this page regularly for up-to-date information on deadlines for October 2019 entry.


SSHP Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy will offer up to six fully funded MPhil/PhD Postgraduate Research Scholarships for 2019 /20 entry.

Closing date for applications: Friday, 8 March 2019.

Bonnart Trust PhD Scholarship
Addressing Intolerance and Integration

A fully funded three-year postgraduate Bonnart Trust PhD Scholarship, to commence in October 2019, will be awarded by the School to an outstanding candidate whose research topic explores one of the following themes:

  • Diversity and Belonging
  • Minorities and Social Justice.

Closing date for applications: Friday 1 February 2019.

ESRC Studentships

Competition for ESRC Studentship for October 2019 is now open

The School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy is a member of the prestigious ESRC-funded UCL, Bloomsbury and East London (UBEL) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). Fully-funded ESRC studentships (including +3 and 1+3 routes) related to a range of disciplinary pathways are available through this DTP.

Applicants are advised to make contact, well in advance of the application deadline, with Birkbeck's UBEL pathway leads:

Closing Date for Applications: Applicants must apply to one of the UBEL DTP pathways by 4pm (GMT) on 8 January 2019 but they must first apply to an MPhil/PhD programme (or MRes programme for 1+3 applications) that forms one of the training routes for this pathway. The deadlines for applying to departments/programmes vary between 1 December 2018 and 8 January 2019 and late applications will not be accepted. AHRC CHASE Studentships

Competition for AHRC CHASE studentship for October 2019 is now open

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) studentships are available for PhD studies in the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, Birkbeck, beginning in Autumn 2019. These studentships are a result of recently announced funding for the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-east England (CHASE) doctoral training programme.
