PhD research opportunities

We aim to recruit outstanding research students who make an important contribution to the research culture of the department.

We provide a rich and lively scholarly environment in which to conduct doctoral research work. Our students have received funding from a range of funding sources, and we continue to attract funding for our University of London MPhil/PhD degrees.

Subject areas

Supervision at MPhil and PhD level is offered in all the main areas of Spanish and Latin American culture. Subjects include:

  • Portuguese and Spanish imperial history, including early modern Asia
  • The colonial literature of Latin America, including native American texts
  • The visual art of Renaissance Spain
  • Colonial Mexican art
  • Discourse analysis and sociopragmatics of Spanish
  • Modern Spanish cultural history and cultural politics
  • Film and visual arts of modern Spain, Portugal and Latin America
  • Modern Portuguese political culture and intellectual history
  • Modern Latin American cultural and literary theory and political thought
  • Latin American poetry and poetics
  • Brazilian and Portuguese visual geography and material culture.
