Teaching and supervision

María Elena teaches in the areas of (Spanish) sociopragmatics / discourse analysis, variational pragmatics, intercultural communication and ELE.  She has also taught short courses in these areas at postgraduate level in various Spanish Universities, including Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad de Sevilla, and Universidad de Valencia.

She has examined several doctoral dissertations in the UK and Europe, including, for example, Queen Mary, Institute of Education, University of London, Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad de Sevilla, Universidad de Almería and Universidad Santiago de Compostela,  and she has also acted as external examiner at undergraduate level in UK universities.

Topics of interest for supervision include small talk and rapport management, the language of service encounters, internet talk, address forms, discursive racism, intercultural/interethnic communication, (regional) pragmatic variation and speech act realization.
