International symposium

Topic: Reality Effects: Poetics of Locality, Memory, and the Body in Contemporary Argentine and Brazilian Cinema

When: 26-28 November 2009

Where: Birkbeck Cinema, 43 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD

About this event
The Centre for Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies, part of the Department of Iberian and Latin American Studies, is hosting an international symposium on the topic 'Reality Effects'.

The symposium will critically de- and re-construct notions of national cinema in an increasingly globalised image-world. It aims to reconceptualise the real from the referential in contemporary cinema.

It will do so by focusing the question of the real (or, of realism in film) on areas that resist metaphoric or allegorical readings, including figurations of the local and the intimate, the body, and the self.

Internationally renowned film directors and theorists will be among the speakers. The final session will be a workshop.

The symposium is supported by the British Arts and Humanities Research Council
