Research interests
John is currently researching and publishing in the areas of citizenship education in schools and for lifelong learning, community based learning and community partnerships in higher education, and on community leadership and involvement in community development and local governance. He has recently given keynote address at a number of international conferences.
Editorial and advisory roles
John Annette is Professor of Citizenship and Lifelong Learning, Pro Vice Master for Lifelong Learning and Engagement at Birkbeck, University of London and Chair of the International Centre for Education for Democratic Citizenship, which is a joint research centre with the Institute of Education. He recently with Dr. Dina Kiwan secured an ESRC Research Seminar on diversity, nationality and citizenship education.
He is on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Educational Studies, the International Journal of Citizenship Education and the London Review of Education.
He has been active in working in partnership with local communities in London and facilitating capacity building for community involvement for many years. He is an advisor to the Department for Children, Families and Schools on youth volunteering and citizenship education, also the Department for Communities and Local Government on capacity building for citizenship and community development. He is on the Executive of the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL) and is the Chair of the Higher Education Panel of the Lifelong Learning Sector Skills Council as well as an advisor to the HEFCE Beacons for Public Engagement and a member of the East London Business Alliance.
He was recently a Commissioner on the Commission on the Future of Volunteering chaired by Baroness Julia Neuberger, is on the executive of the London Empowerment Network organized by the London Civic Forum, which supports the Greater London Authority and the Mayor, and he is currently the Chair of the Linking London Lifelong Learning Network and the Higher Education Academy’s PVC Employer Engagement Group.
