Fire Safety Awareness (45 mins) - All you need to know about fire safety at BBK or anywhere else for that matter.  All new staff are provided with an safety induction pack that covers fire safety and other issues.  However, this colourful and dramatic presentation is offered as a refresher for school & departmental meetings or similar.

Zone Fire Marshalling (30 mins) - Whilst all staff are expected to act as fire marshals to the extent of encouraging others to leave the building and assisting with crowd control outside, Birkbeck has a number of Zone Fire Marshals with more defined duties. All new Zone Fire Marshals need to attend this straightforward session.

Manual Handling - (1 hour) - Learn to lift/move anything properly, from a pencil to an office.

General Risk Assessment (1 hour) - General principles and practice of risk assessment. Includes desktop exercises.

Display Screen Equipment Assessor Training (1 hour) - Every school/section is required to designate a DSE Assessor.  This session explains what is required and how to carry out the role.

Safe Use of Display Screen Equipment (20 mins.)  - On-line training.  Don't get aches and pains from your DSE kit.

First aid  The Health and Safety Office arranges half day 'Basic First Aid' courses and one day 'Emergency First Aid at Work' courses on the premises several times each year.  Staff who have previously registered an interest or whose certificates are about to expire are notified directly.  In special circumstances, training may be arranged for individuals with an off site  provider such as the Red Cross.

COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) - (1 hour) - Background to the legislation, how to complete a COSHH form and what else to do.

Safety for Managers - Managers, a quick guide to your responsibilities in Birkbeck and how to discharge them can be found on-line at : http://www.bbk.ac.uk/so/guidance/managers

Personal Safety (45 mins) - Hints from the Met and others on how to keep safe when out and about.

Radiation Safety (length and content is dependant on present experience).

British Safety Council (BSC) Qualifications: Birkbeck Health and Safety Services is registered to deliver the following courses developed by the BSC.

Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work  - Suitable for anyone wanting to learn the basics of safety and gain a qualification recognising this. The course has an examination (not too tough) and those passing are awarded a BSC certificate.

Level 2 Certificate in Risk Assessment
Level 2 Certificate in COSHH  Risk Assessment
Level 2 Display Screen Equipment Risk Assessment
Level 2 Manual Handling Risk Assessment
Level 2 Fire Risk Assessment Assessment
Level 2 Certificate in Supervising Staff Safely

As their titles imply these courses are suitable for persons who have staff supervisory duties or are called upon to undertake general or specific purpose risk assessments and wish third party recognition of their competence.  The taught component of all courses takes 1/2 - 1 day then there is a small project to carry out (not too tough).

In Addition: Birkbeck Health and Safety Services is prepared to develop 'bespoke' safety training on any topic that staff might wish to suggest if within the competence of the Health and Safety Officer. Where this is not possible, advice on external courses is available.
