The 295 acre grounds of the Fort Hill Estate (home of John C. Calhoun, vice president of the United States in 1820) are now operated by Clemson University as the South Carolina Botanical Gardens. Amongst the gardens of daffodils and rhododendrons a programme of site specific environmental sculptures are installed, led by programme facilitator Ernie Denny, Director of the Gardens. The first nature-based site-specific sculpture for the gardens was installed in 1995; "The Crucible" by artist Herb Parker. Other artists include Alfio Bonanno, Patrick Doherty and Karen McCoy.

The Garden is open every day, dawn to dusk, free of charge. The Discovery Museum, Art Gallery and Geology Museum are subject to entry fees and particular opening hours.
