Open to the public from June 6, 2009, The Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden surrounds The Joslyn Art Museum to display its sizeable sculpture collection within a natural environment.

Architecture firm HDR, Inc. worked alongside construction company Kiewit Construction to landscape the garden. By using granite and stone from the interior of the museum, the garden’s design mimics that of the indoor galleries of the museum. Incorporating flowing water, carefully placed vegetation, and pedestrian walkways, The Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden creates an outdoor space that brings art, nature, and people together. By placing granite slabs throughout the green to establish a suggested path for visitors, they are encouraged to become immersed in the artistic environment. Additionally, a granite wall forms an enclosure that separates the garden from the urban surroundings, delivering the illusion of a secluded art gallery within nature.

On view is a statue of a Sioux Warrior proposed by sculptor John David Brcin in the late 1920s for The Joslyn Art Museum. It was realized by Omaha sculptor Matthew Placzek for The Peter Kiewit Sculpture Garden and is now the signature piece to represent the space. Other works include installations by Jesus Moroles and Charles and Mary Heider and classic and contemporary sculptures by Leonard Baskin, Jun Kaneko, Betty Woodman, Allan Houser, Tom Otterness, William Zorach, Scott Burton, John Coleman, and Auguste Rodin.

The Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden was supported with a donation from Omaha resident Peter Kiewit’s private philanthropic trust.

Open all year round 7:00 am to 11:00 pm; Free Admission.
