Established in 1986, the garden was designed by Montreal architect and artist, Melvin Charney. The landscaped public park serves as an open-air museum and includes 11 large scale outdoor sculptures. The garden is laid out as a series of narratives: Orchard, Meadow, Arcade, Esplanade, Belvedere, and Allegorical Columns – each of which relates to the wider history of architecture as well as to the urban context of the site.

Musee Plein Air has a collection of around 50 sculptures permanently on display that stretches from the grounds of the Musee de Lachine to the Parc René-Lévesque that borders the museum. A sculpture symposium in 1985 laid the foundations of this sculpture park, initiated by sculptor Dominique Rolland. The works reflect the vitality of sculpture in Quebec. Notable artists include Andre Fournelle, Michel Goulet, David Moore and Bill Vazan.

Musee Plein Air de Lachine is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Admission is free.
