Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, the memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust is located near Brandenberg Gate, on the site of Goebbels bunker. It consists of 4,100 concrete pillars (stelae) of varying heights stretching over 4.7 acres. Visitors are free to wander day or night through the labyrinth of grave stones without names. From a distance the collective pillars appear as undulating wave patterns, like swells of the sea.

The unmarked paths, uneven ground, & pillars of varying heights, create a deliberately uneasy & confusing atmosphere.

Opened in October 2008, the Waldfrieden Sculpture Park hosts a collection of works by Tony Cragg, with temporary exhibitions by other contemporary artists.

It was thanks to the private initiative of Tony Cragg, a British sculptor living in Wuppertal, that the Sculpture Park was founded and installed. Thirty years after Cragg took up his exhibition activity, he began looking for a permanent site for presenting sculpture outdoors and discovered the abandoned Waldfrieden property, which he bought in 2006. That very same year he began redesigning the park grounds and the buildings that, after long years of vacancy, needed to be thoroughly renovated and modernized. In appreciation of the historical estate, its former structures and material substance were preserved to the greatest extent possible, thus keeping its historical dimension intact despite the conversion of the park and buildings to accommodate their new use. In 2008, the Sculpture Park was opened under the auspices of the Cragg family's nonprofit foundation. It houses a steadily growing collection of sculpture, including examples from Tony Cragg's own large oeuvre. All is accompanied by changing exhibitions of internationally known artists, lectures on culture and the humanities, as well as concerts. Beyond this, the Cragg Foundation is also dedicated to research on, and the publication of, the subject of the fine arts.

March to November, Tuesday to Sunday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
The park is open on public holidays

December to February, Friday to Sunday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The project KUNST LANDSCHAFT (meaning ‘Art Landscape’) was conceived in 1967 and began as an invitational symposium event the summers of 1974 to 1978. Artists worked in and with the landscape of Neuenkirchen, using stone, steel and soil. Since the 1980s new work has been added to the landscape annually or bi-annually, by international artists. Today the range of work extends from walk-in architectural sculptures and electronically controlled sound installations to video works and photographic projects. Around 30 projects can be found on heaths, in the woods, village and the fields. Project Art Landscape is organised and managed by Springhornhof, a gallery space and organisation based in old farmhouse buildings in the Lüneburg Heath.

Artists include Dan Peterman, Tony Cragg and Rainer Ganahl. In 2003 Elmgreen and Dragset installed the ‘Park for Unwanted Sculptures’, a gated space for homeless outdoor sculptures that have been rejected by current decision-making and evaluation criteria of art in public spaces.

The outdoor works are open to the public daily. Springhornhof is open Tuesdays to Sundays, from 2pm till 6pm. Admission is charged. Guided tours are available by appointment.

Springhornhof also rents bicycles to use during your visit to the outdoor sculptures and installations of the project ART LANDSCAPE. Please register in advance by phone. A map of landscape projects is available at the Springhornhof front desk.
