Artist's Statement (2009)

How many sculptures does it take, to make a sculpture park?

Since there are no rules, regulations or sheriff's possee, to enforce them; I would say it is up to the eye of the beholder. Two well placed Henry Moore sculptures at "Louisiana", looking out over the Kattegat, toward Sweden, definitely qualify. On the other hand, six sculptures of cowboys and injuns, made of welded hub caps, beer cans and bicycle chains, in the middle of Mojave Desert, behind a filling station, probably do not. Being the author and editor of a directory, gives one a lot of artistic license, since we operate under the same rules.

As a sculptor, I have been making sculptures that are hard edge, geometric, abstract, and constructivist, mostly in steel and stainless steel.  I have recently finished a series of fifteen endless columns that transform the majesty of Cleopatra's Needles, obelisks, into stainless steel. These range in size from twelve to fifty feet height. The tallest, "Ode to the Snark", is in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum. It is bolted int obearing walls that support the roof of the Museum, and the sculpture. Others are in Chicago, Grounds for Sculpture, and the entrance to the Chianti grape vineyards, Siena.

My sculptures are in many private and public collections worldwide, from Europas Parkas Sculpture Park, Vilnius, Lithuania, to Hakone Open-air Museum Sculpture park, in the foothills of Mt Fujiyama. Installing sculptures or attending dedications, has given me many opportunities to visit sculpture parks, both here and overseas. I have seen sculpture parks in their nascent state, when dirt is still being pushed around; to more established parks that have ivy growing on their walls. I have found that sculptors that have work in sculpture parks; as well as  curators, directors and trustees of parks have a keen sense of camaraderie, and hospitality.

From these chance meetings, after a few minutes, I learn about sculpture parks and gardens that I had never heard of before, and vice versa. Keeping a directory of sculpture parks up to date, is part of the fun. To simplify this process, I have links from my website to those of the sculpture parks in the directory. This has had the sought-after effect, of the sculpture parks maintaining their sites, and keeping them up to date. I subscribe to a software service that gives me weekly updates on any changes. or deletions.

This project is an interactive process, of communications, between park visitors and the directory.
