Diane Lartey

MSc Microbiology

In 2001, Diane moved to the UK from Ghana with the British army.

'I was working as a medic in the army, but I had always wanted to do a Master's degree to further my career.'

Diane, who had a BSc in Biological Sciences from a Ghanaian university, made arrangements with the army to work part-time and study:

'In Ghana I had heard of the fantastic reputation of the University of London and knew of Birkbeck's Department of Biological Sciences - it was the obvious choice.'

During the second year of her course, Diane found a job working for Allergy Therapeutics UK, and she decided to leave the army.

'My job involves working on allergy vaccines and helping to bring them to the market. Vaccinations can make such huge difference in a country like mine, so I am very proud to be working in this field.'

Diane is now hoping to move back to Ghana to use the skills she has learnt:

'In Ghana education determines who you become. You have to work hard to achieve, but there are a lot of opportunities in a developing country. I would like to do my PhD and one day start my own business, but first I am planning to settle down and start a family.'
