Science Week

Each year Birkbeck organises a week of free public lectures and related events to share internationally recognised research in the areas of science.

These events are for anyone interested in science and those who are considering studying science at university. The free science talks can be attended in-person at Birkbeck or attendees can join our global online audience. The Faculty of Science encompasses three schools: Psychological Sciences, Natural Sciences and Computing and Mathematical Sciences.

In 2024, over four nights at the end of May, the faculty will host engaging and interactive evening events, including the annual Rosalind Franklin Lecture and the Andrew and Kathleen Booth Memorial Lecture. 

All events will continue into the evening with opportunities to take a tour of the Natural Sciences laboratories on the Wednesday and explore the Psychological Sciences poster exhibition on the Friday. Attendees will be able to meet the speaker, as well as current faculty staff and students over a drinks reception which will follow each event.

• Wednesday 29 May, 6-9pm: Natural Sciences presents the Rosalind Franklin Lecture - details to be confirmed.
• Thursday 30 May, 6-9pm: Computing and Mathematical Sciences presents the Andrew and Kathleen Booth Memorial Lecture with speaker Chris Webb, Microsoft, Data literacy for all: creating a data culture within an organisation.
• Friday 31 May, 6-9pm: Psychological Sciences presents an evening with Dr Benjamin Alderson-Day, author of Presence: The Strange Science and True Stories of the Unseen Other.
• Monday 3 June, 6-9pm: the annual Birkbeck Gender and Sexuality (BiGS) Lecture delivered by Professor Ann Phoenix FBA, UCL.
