History and partnerships

We offer innovative and world-leading courses, many of them delivered through distance learning, across our three departments: Biological Sciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences and Psychological Sciences.

Staff across our departments are working to promote equality and diversity among staff and students. We're particularly proud of the achievements of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Psychological Sciences which have been recognised in Athena SWAN awards

Our history

The distinguished scientists Rosalind Franklin and J D Bernal worked at Birkbeck. We commemorate Bernal's legacy with our annual Bernal Lecture and, from 2016, we've been delighted to mark the scientific achievements of Rosalind Franklin with an annual lecture in her name. Our inaugural speaker was Professor Elspeth Garman, the celebrated Oxford crystallographer.
