World-class research resources

Based in central London, Birkbeck offers easy access to a wealth of research resources. As members of the University of London, our students can also access the full range of University of London libraries.

Birkbeck Library: Housed across 5 floors of our main building overlooking Torrington Square, the library has 423 study places and provides a quiet, comfortable environment for study, while the website provides a gateway to a plethora of electronic resources, including e-books, over 100 databases and over 30,000 electronic journals.

Senate House Library: one of the UK’s largest arts and humanities libraries, containing internationally important collections, is situated right next door to Birkbeck. Our students can access the library for reference; borrowing depends on which department they are studying with.

Other University of London college and institute libraries: there are a number of specialist collections near Birkbeck. Our students can use many of these libraries for reference or, in some cases, borrowing.

Access scheme: our students are entitled to use many other libraries, both in London and throughout the UK. We are members of various access schemes

The British Library: our students can apply to use the British Library’s reading rooms at St Pancras, conveniently located 10 minutes’ walk away.

Other research resources

In addition to Birkbeck’s extensive range of seminars, lecture series and graduate activities, other nearby colleges and institutes run graduate and research seminars that Birkbeck students are generally welcome to attend. Birkbeck also has links with national cultural institutions, including the Tate, the Museum of London and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

We are also located near many specialist centres of research, including the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine and the City of London Record Offices.
