‘Standing up for Science’ workshop

Free event for early career scientists, engineers, medics and social scientists (including PhDs, post-docs or equivalent).

Learn how the media works, how evidence can inform policy, what journalists and policymakers want and need from researchers, and how to involve the public in communicating your research. Hear directly from and ask questions of researchers who have interacted with the media, science journalists, and policymakers.

Seed Funding – UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

Awards of up to £2500 are available to enable researchers to develop and deliver projects that engage people outside of academia with their research. It is anticipated that this will enable new collaborations to be formed or pilot work to be trialled.

Two rounds of funding will be available in the 2018-19 academic year. Deadlines for applications:
11 November 2018 (project must be complete by 31 March 2019)
17 February 2019 (project must be complete by 30 September 2019)

Wellcome Photography Prize

Photographers and other image makers from all disciplines are invited to enter the Wellcome Photography Prize, which celebrates compelling imagery that captures stories of health, medicine and science. They are looking for entries that can captivate people with stories of science and medicine, and start conversations about some of the health challenges humanity faces today.

Influencing Policy: Planning Workshop

Thursday 15th November, 10.30-12.30

Open to all interested PhDs, Post-docs and staff at Birkbeck.

Discuss possible ways to involve policy makers and influencers in your research. From think tanks to Select Committees, identify opportunities to connect with relevant groups or individuals. Understand the English legislative process and hear how other Birkbeck researchers have successfully engaged with policy. Take time to consider who you want to involve in your work and discuss the best ways to share your research with different groups.
