Enrolment procedures

When to enrol

You will need to enrol on your programme of study before the start of each academic year. If you do not complete enrolment and pay the appropriate fees, you will not be permitted to attend classes or access any college facilities, including the Library, computing resources or the Students' Union.

Birkbeck has an online enrolment facility where all students can confirm their personal and programme details through to arranging their fee payments.  This facility allows you to enrol and pay, either in full (by credit or debit card), or by setting up a direct debit mandate to enable you to pay in instalments.  You will also be able to pay further instalments or check your tuition fee account at any time.

Enrol and pay your fees on-line by going to:

http://www.bbk.ac.uk/students/

If you only confirm your personal and programme details on-line, but do not arrange on-line payment of fees, you must print, complete and return to the Registry a paper copy of the Fee Statement with your instructions for payment.

If for any reason you are unable to complete on-line enrolment, or you do not wish to use this facility, you may request a complete set of paper enrolment forms from Registry.  If you are eligible to enrol you will have received notification from Registry, including a reply slip to return if you wish to receive paper forms.  Alternatively, you may email your request to enrolment@bbk.ac.uk.  Paper forms will only be sent to you on submission of a formal request to the Registry.

For further information please refer to the enrolment, registration and fees guidance notes:

Guidance notes 2009/10

Please note that we cannot issue Birkbeck membership cards until you have made satisfactory arrangements for fee payment.

What happens once you enrol

Once we receive your completed enrolment form and fees statement, you will then receive the following:

  • An information pack from the School that organises your programme: This will include the timetable of classes, preliminary reading lists and details of any special arrangements about the first meeting of the programme. Most Schools try to arrange a session with new students at the start of term for introductory tours of the Library, allocation of laboratory space (where applicable), details on computer access and meetings with tutors.
  • Your Birkbeck Student Card: Once you have enrolled as a student and arrangements to pay your fees have been accepted you will be eligible to receive a College Membership Card.  This card serves as your Colleges ID card, Library card and Access card.  In order to receive your card you must provide us with a recent image of yourself, either a passport-sized photo or you may upload an image to your My Studies at Birkbeck web page.
