Dr Narayan's teaching and research interests are in the areas of:

- Racialisation and postcoloniality
- Sexualisation
- 'Racial science'
- 'Beauty' and popular culture
- Contemporary political communities
- Postcolonial urban cultures and social identities
- Music and cultural politics
- Ethnography
She is Convenor of the 'Race Forum' and organised the colloquium 'Race, Gender, Postcoloniality: A colloquium on the work of Avtar Brah' at Birkbeck in July 2009 and co-organised the conference 'After 7/7' that was held at Goldsmiths in February 2006. She is also a member of the BSA and the BSA Race Forum.
