Dr Narayan's teaching and research interests are in the areas of:

  • Histories of 'race' and racism
  • Racialisation and postcoloniality
  • Sexualisation
  • 'Racial science'
  • 'Beauty' and popular culture
  • Contemporary political communities
  • Postcolonial urban cultures and social identities
  • Music and cultural politics
  • Ethnography

 

She is Convenor of the 'Race Forum' and organised the colloquium 'Race, Gender, Postcoloniality: A colloquium on the work of Avtar Brah' at Birkbeck in July 2009 and co-organised the conference 'After 7/7' that was held at Goldsmiths in February 2006. She is also a member of the BSA and the BSA Race Forum.
