BEng (Belf), MSc PhD (Edin), AFHEA

Academic background

  • Andi Fugard (they/them) joined Birkbeck in May 2017. They have a background in informatics and psychology, training at the University of Edinburgh, where they took a PhD (2009) on individual differences in reasoning along the broader autism spectrum, and an MSc (2005) in Neuroinformatics. Their first degree was in computer science (Queen’s University Belfast, 2002). They were a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Salzburg, Austria (2008–2011); a research fellow at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families (2011–2013); and a lecturer in research methods for educational and child psychology at University College London (2013–2017).

Research and teaching

  • My research focuses on mental healthcare, for instance, how people’s needs are assessed in services, whether treatments actually help, and how metrics are (mis)used in service management. Most of my work uses quantitative methods. I am increasingly interested in how traditional social science methodology may be interwoven with experiential approaches like group relations conferences and survivor-led theorising drawing on lived experience.
  • See my website for further information.

Research interests

  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Practice-based evidence
  • Therapy effectiveness
  • Mixing methods

  • I welcome applications from students who are interested in topics around mental health and wellbeing, for instance, the experiences, benefits, and harms of psychological therapies; how the concept of evidence is used in therapy and how government policy shapes and is shaped by this; differences and similarities between professional and non-professional ways of helping people with mental health difficulties. Students with lived experience of mental health problems are very welcome.
