Full PhD studentships in Psychosocial Studies
The Department of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, invites applications for research leading to the award of PhD as part of the new UCL, Bloomsbury & East London Doctoral Training Partnership.
As the only department of Psychosocial Studies in the UK, we are concerned with the interconnections between individual subjectivities, group identities, and historical and contemporary social and political formations in a globalised world. We bring together scholars who have backgrounds in a variety of areas of academic enquiry, including anthropology; sociology; gender and sexuality; cultural and postcolonial studies; education studies; critical psychology; psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. We have a strongly interdisciplinary focus and can offer supervision in areas including violence, state violence and war; intimacy, parenting, care, friendship and love; ‘race’, racism and diaspora; human rights, citizenship and social movements; education and learning; embodiment; communities and collective life; gender and sexuality. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework members of the Department were entered into the Sociology panel and were ranked 13th in the country.
We welcome applications for consideration for Economic and Social Research Council scholarships that cover the full costs of a degree programme in Psychosocial Studies, Sociology or Gender and Sexuality, leading to the award of a PhD. Awards will be made through the UCL, Bloomsbury, and UEL Doctoral Training Partnership. The funding will cover fees, standard maintenance and a London allowance where students meet the ESRC UK requirements. EU students who are non-UK residents are eligible for a fees only studentship.
Please indicate in your application which pathway you are applying to (Psychosocial Studies; Sociology; or Gender and Sexuality) to forward your application to the respective shortlisting committee.
Deadline to be considered for this funding is 6 January 2017.
Applicants for the Psychosocial Studies pathway should apply to the Department of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck. Applicants for the Sociology and the Gender and Sexuality pathways can apply to the Department of Psychosocial Studies or to one of the other departments involved (Geography, Environment and Development; Politics; or Film, Media and Cultural Studies).
