Event description

What is Birkbeck's Big Ideas?

A series of thought provoking FREE events, designed to inspire and bring world class Birkbeck academics to the local community with this latest installment from Prof Angelica Ronald.

About the workshop

Paranoia is a common experience and it is particularly prevalent in teenagers.  What causes experiences such as paranoia, and what does it predict for our future mental health? This talk will discuss the very latest scientific evidence about the characteristics and causes of psychotic-like experiences such as paranoia. It will examine how and why psychotic-like experiences often occur with other challenges such as sleep disturbances and mood problems. Furthermore, where the boundary lies between a healthy and an ill mind will be explored.  This latest scientific research offers considerable hope for improving prevention and treatment of mental health difficulties during the teenage years.

 About our speaker

Professor Angelica Ronald conducts scientific research at Birkbeck’s Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, and is the director of Birkbeck’s Genes Environment Lifespan laboratory, which she established in 2011. Her research aims to identify and understand genetic and environmental causes for complex disorders such as autism and schizophrenia.

The event is FREE and open to all, but please note that seating is allocated on a first come first served basis.Registration and refreshments start at 6pm and the talk will commence at 6.15pm. We look forward to welcoming you to this Birkbeck's Big Idea event!
