Our history

Psychology at Birkbeck has its roots in the beginnings of the scientific study of the subject in the UK over a century ago. The department was established in the difficult period of the Second World War, but its origin can be traced to King's College London in the early days of psychological science towards the end of the Nineteenth Century.
