About us
The Department of Psychological Sciences is a centre of vibrant research and teaching whose roots can be traced to the beginnings of the scientific study of the subject in the UK over a century ago.
Influential research
In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), the Department was ranked 5th in the UK for the excellence of its research. In 2006, research groups in the Department won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education.
Stimulating courses
We offer stimulating courses at all levels of study, as well as providing expert supervision for the MPhil/PhD. In the last Quality Assurance round, our teaching was rated 23 out of 24.
Distinguished history
The department was established in the difficult period of the Second World War, but Psychology at Birkbeck has its roots in the beginnings of the scientific study of the subject in the UK over a century ago. Read more about our history.
Unique location
We are located within very easy reach of our research institutes, laboratories and the University of London Library, and a few minutes' walk from the British Library and other University of London Colleges.
School of Science
We are part of Birkbeck's new School of Science, which unites us with six other departments of Birkbeck, University of London.
