A vibrant academic community
Birkbeck’s flexible approach and academic reputation attract more than 7000 degree students a year, more than half of whom are studying undergraduate courses. Our students come to us from all over the world and represent over 100 countries.
This makes for a student community as diverse and cosmopolitan as London’s population; committed, hard-working and highly motivated, they are a source of great pride to Birkbeck and of mutual support to each other.
Our students also have the opportunity to attend lectures and talks by high-profile speakers and commentators from around the world.
Recent examples include:
- leading public intellectual Professor Slavoj Žižek
- well-known historians Professor Joanna Bourke, Professor Orlando Figes and Professor Simon Schama
- world-class speakers on molecular biology research Sir John Skehel, FRS and Professor Gabriel Waksman
- the former Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen
- Professor of Crystallography at Birkbeck, Helen Saibil, FRS
- renowned historian and Birkbeck President, Professor Eric Hobsbawm
