Fees and financial support for current Certificate of Higher Education students
If you started before autumn 2012, you will avoid paying the much higher fees that will be charged to new students from autumn 2012. You may also be eligible for government support with tuition fees if you are on a low income or in receipt of benefits.
Birkbeck has held most 2011/2012 Certificate of Higher Education module fees at 2010/2011 levels. This will allow students either to start a certificate or to complete certificates they started last year at similar prices.

Financial support
- We offer great financial support packages and bursaries, including non-repayable government grants to help pay towards tuition fees and to support additional course costs. Watch our financial support video
- Under the current funding system, all financial support for part-time undergraduate students remains non-repayable. (Note: the changes to student finance in 2012 mean that these non-repayable packages will no longer be available for new students starting their studies in 2012.)
Payment details
- For part-time study, your tuition fees are normally payable on enrolment.
- Because we understand that it can be difficult pay all your fees upfront, we provide flexible payment options to make it easier for you to manage your finances at no extra cost. You have the option of paying in instalments either monthly by direct debit or termly by credit/debit card.

Thinking of moving on to study for a degree afterwards?
- When you have completed your Certificate of Higher Education, you may be able to progress to study for a first degree (e.g. BA, BSc, LLB).
- To be eligible, you must:
- have started your Certificate of Higher Education before 1 September 2012 and successfully complete your Certificate of Higher Education
- progress directly onto your first degree without a break in study
- have studied part-time for your Certificate of Higher Education, and continue to study part-time for your first degree.
- Students who meet these requirements will be eligible to pay the lower pre-2012 fees and access non-repayable government financial support (known as ‘PTG1’ grants). Note that these generous government grants will not be available to new students starting their studies in autumn 2012.
- If you do not meet these criteria, you will study in the new 2012 fees and finance system under which most Birkbeck students studying for an undergraduate programme for the first time, will be eligible for government student loans to help pay the increased fees.
