Although he is a successful civil servant, Abdul felt he wanted to redress his lack of a degree:

'After only two years of a medical degree, I left to start work. Since then I have always competed with graduates, but I felt that something was missing.

'I now complete on a level playing field, and getting a degree has killed a ghost of mine. I would and do recommend Birkbeck. It's opened doors for me.'
