Working in the UK
Working part-time while you study
Our evening teaching model gives Birkbeck students the opportunity to do part-time daytime work. Not only does this help you to manage your finances while you are studying, but also enable you to gain experience of the UK workplace and working practices. The University of London Careers Service (ULCS) can help Birkbeck students to find part-time work.
It is important to note, if you are studying in the UK on a Tier 4 Student Visa you are only permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours a week during term time, but full-time during academic vacations. See the UK Border Agency Website for full details of working hours regulations.
Working full-time once you have graduated
Under the UK government's Tier 1 Post-Study Work Visa scheme, international students are eligible to apply to stay in the UK for two years after they graduate to undertake full-time work.
This scheme provides you with the opportunity to get an in-depth insight into UK working practices and enables you to gain valuable work experience to enhance your CV/Resume.
Birkbeck offers final-year students help with applying for this visa and ULCS offers a comprehensive and highly focused career planning and development service to students, graduates, postgraduates and contract researchers at all stages of their careers.
