An inspiring tradition

In 1823, George Birkbeck started a revolution in London’s education system by establishing a college specifically for working people. In 1920, Birkbeck officially became part of the University of London on condition that it should continue to teach evening and part-time courses. Championing part-time higher education is still our central mission.

More than 11,000 Londoners enrolled on our certificates and short courses last year. Committed, hard-working and highly motivated, they are a source of great pride to Birkbeck. Some of them took their Birkbeck course at one of our local partner venues across Greater London. This unique arrangement takes Birkbeck into the community, and you may find that the subject you’re interested in studying is taught at a venue close to your workplace or home.
