Printing

You will find printers in all of our ITS workstation rooms; A4 and A3 colour printing is available in Room 109 and in the Library; a quick-print facility is also available on the ground floor of Malet Street, outside the Student Centre.

All use the same print charging system, which is also used on the photocopiers in the Library.

View our guide on printing booklets.

Printing costs

  • Mono A4 printing costs are 5p per page (single or double-sided)
  • Colour A4 printing costs are 25p per page (single or double-sided)
  • Mono A3 printing costs are 10p per page (single or double-sided)
  • Colour A3 printing costs are 50p per page (single or double-sided)
  • Staff wishing to print should discuss their requirements with their department. IT Services can provide a service for staff to print if necessary (use Ask in My Birkbeck for Staff to arrange this).
  • If you are a visitor and wish to print, you should discuss your requirements with Room Bookings.

Poor or missing print jobs

  • If you have printed something and the quality is poor - for example if the printer toner is low, or the printer has damaged the output - please bring the damaged output to the ITS Service Desk within three days to have your account credited.
  • If you sent a print job but nothing came out of the printer then please raise an Ask request including the details of time, machine, document name and username:
  • Students: please use Ask.
  • Birkbeck staff: please use Ask in My Birkbeck for Staff.
  • We will check what has been debited from your print balance and correct it. The likelihood is either the system did not print nor charge you or you printed to a different printer by mistake.

Charging your Print credit

  • The balance of your print account is shown when you log in: you can see it by clicking on the $ icon on the system try (bottom right of the screen).
  • You can add credit to your print account with a credit card. You can use your credit card for this online payments form
  • From 1 October 2019 an administration fee of £2.50 will be applied to any refunds. By topping up your account you accept that any request to refund funds deposited from this date will first have this fee deducted.

Printing from the Birkbeck wireless network

  • Printing from wireless devices uses the same PCounter as other centrally managed printers and photocopiers in workstation rooms and Birkbeck Library.
  • To print from your mobile device, make sure you are connected to the Birkbeck Eduroam network. Note that the VPN may be required.
  • There are two ways to send a document to print: either email the document to the system (all devices) or upload it via the web page (laptops and tablets only).
  • If emailing, . If you are sending from an email address unknown to the PCounter system, you will receive a reply, asking you to click to register the email address against your user account (your Birkbeck username and password). You only need to do this once.
  • Laptop and tablet users can follow our guidelines for using the wireless printing portal.
