Stratford campus

We work with a range of partners in Newham to provide advice and guidance to local residents about access to Higher Education, as well as working with other departments in Birkbeck to share research and expertise.

Support for prospective undergraduate students

  • We deliver activities and workshops across Newham for those considering taking their first undergraduate degree. These activities provide advice, guidance and learning opportunities for groups typically underrepresented in Higher Education.
  • Our activities include:
    • Big Ideas public lecture series
    • Get Started workshops: Preparing for Study, Writing an Application and Personal Statement, and Fees and Finance
    • Information stalls at community events and festivals
    • Application and Personal Statement drop-in workshops at Newham Community Neighbourhood Hubs, such as Stratford Library and Beckton Globe
    • BBK Chat Stratford, a mentoring programme pairing first year undergraduate students with second year students.

step change: Support for Newham graduates

  • Step Change is a support programme for underemployed and unemployed graduates in the borough of Newham. The programme includes information and guidance about postgraduate study, alongside career and employment workshops delivered by Birkbeck's Careers team. Through Step Change, participants can access additional careers support while learning more about postgraduate study and how this might fit with their long term career ambitions.
  • Our activities include:
    • Careers Workshops delivered by Birkbeck Careers
    • Postgraduate Get Started workshops: Preparing for Study, Writing an Application, and Fees and Finance
    • Postgraduate Academic Skills workshops
    • Postgraduate taster lectures
    • Sector-specific skills sessions delivered by Birkbeck academics
  • Referral for careers workshops are offered by Newham Workplace and are for Newham residents only. Academic skills sessions, postgraduate lectures, sector-specific skills sessions and Postgraduate Get Started workshops are open to all.

Our partnerships in Newham

  • Our work in Newham is supported/funded by London Legacy Development Corporation. We also work in partnership with the Local Authority and other Community Groups.
  • Our partners support us to build links with local residents and deliver our work in community venues. We attend local authority/community events, forums and boards across - sharing our knowledge about access to Higher Education, our programmes and taking part in wider conversations about employment, education, training and life-long learning in the borough.
  • In addition to this, a key part of our partnership work in the borough is making our Stratford campus a community resource by hosting partners to deliver programmes and events.
  • We're also looking forward to developing our work with other universities in the borough.
