Expert in Residence

The second part of the project involves our expert in residence, Fiona Harrow, who is a senior civil servant, and will offer talks on a range of employability-related issues ranging from advice and information on various aspects of career planning and development for those who are interested in a career in the Civil Service, Diplomatic Service or the Press Office of government departments.  All events will take place during the first half of 2015 and will be timed in a way that avoids clashes with teaching sessions. Some of them will be open to all current Politics students, while others will be geared towards specific groups amongst them.

The following seminars were given or hosted by a Fiona Harrow and were open to current students of the Department of Politics at Birkbeck.

  • Seminar 1: Careers in the UK civil service (10 January 2015)
  • Seminar 2: Skills for a career in the UK civil service (11 February 2015)
  • Seminar 3: Preparing for the application and interview process (18 March 2015)
  • Seminar 4: A day in the life of a government press officer (15 July 2015)

Fiona is a graduate of Birkbeck's MSc Public Policy and Management. She has extensive experience in central government, the private sector and working with charities.

Fiona has worked in a variety of departments within central government, starting her career with the civil service in the Home Office, working on criminal justice strategy, policy and delivery. She then moved to the Ministry of Justice working on victim and witness strategy, policy and delivery and finally to the Department of Education working on child protection policy. Fiona has worked as a senior civil servant for more than 10 years, under both the Labour and the coalition governments.

Prior to joining the civil service Fiona worked for a global IT and finance company serving as their Director General for Europe. She developed the strategic direction for the company's European operation, established a presence in London, Leeds, Sweden and Germany and lead the negotiations with pre-eminent financial institutions across Europe. To part fund this expansion Fiona worked in partnership with four colleagues and raised over £40M in venture capital from the private and finance sectors.

Fiona is also a Trustee for the UK entity of an International charity.
