Professor Hussein Kassim

Professor Kassim, who taught at Birkbeck from 1994 until 2007, is currently Professor of Politics at the School of Political, Social and International Studies and Political Science Mentor of the ESRC Centre for Competition Policy at the University of East Anglia.

While at Birkbeck he was involved in the creation of a number of postgraduate programmes, including the MSc/MRes in the Politics of Europe and the European Union (formerly European Politics), as well as the BA in Politics and Society.

He served as QA Director, leading the School through Subject Review in March 2001 and Internal Review in November 2005, and was Head of School 2006-07.  By the time of his departure, he shared with Sam Ashenden the distinction of being the longest-serving member of the School.

Research interests

His research focuses mainly on EU institutions, EU policy and the relationship between the EU and the member states. He is co-editor of The National Coordination of EU Policy, 2 volumes, (2000, 2001, Oxford University Press), Beyond the Market: the EU and National Social Policy, (1998, Routledge), and The EU and National Industrial Policy, (Routledge, 1996), and has published articles in West European Politics, Journal of European Public Policy, Revue Française de Science Politiques and other journals.

Career

Before moving to Birkbeck, Professor Kassim taught at Nottingham University and the University of Oxford.  He has held visiting positions at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris, the Center for European Studies at Harvard University, New York University and Columbia University.

Education

Professor Kassim read PPE at New College, Oxford and studied for an MPhil and DPhil at Nuffield College, Oxford.
