Tony Wright joins Department of Politics

We are delighted to welcome Dr Tony Wright to the Department of Politics.  He will be our Professorial Fellow in British Politics.

Dr Wright retired from Parliament in 2010, after 18 years service as an MP, and a long and distinguished tenure as chairman of the Public Administration Committee.  Last year he chaired the Committee on Reform of the House of Commons which proposed important changes to the organization and practices of the House. In 2009 he won the Political Studies Association Parliamentarian of the Year Award.

Before entering Parliament Dr Wright was Reader in Politics at the University of Birmingham.  He is the author or editor of some 21 books, and is co-editor of the Political Quarterly.

His main areas of expertise are the civil service, public service delivery, accountability, parliament and British political thought. He will help to establish the planned Centre for the Study of British Politics and Political life   for which he will organize and lead a series of practitioner-based seminars on British politics which will be available to our students.  He will also develop and teach an undergraduate course on How to do Politics as well as contributing occasional lectures and offering supervision to dissertation students.
