Research training

We appreciate that it is important to reflect upon, and thereby improve, the way you organise, write about and defend your ideas.

To this end, the Department provides a series of training sessions tailored to the needs of research students in philosophy. These seminars are usually held once a term during Reading Week. The Department also regularly hosts a series of talks called ‘Approaches to Philosophy’, where philosophers from different universities present their way of approaching the subject.

In the past, sessions have included discussion of the following areas:

  • students and supervisors
  • planning a thesis
  • how to give presentations
  • conducting an oral examination
  • attending conferences
  • preparing a CV
  • evaluating student essays

Research students are also encouraged to attend the generic training courses organised by the Birkbeck Graduate Research School. You can find out more about these courses on the My Birkbeck website.
