Bina Vadher (33)

MSc Occupational Psychology

Bina went straight from school to university for a BA in Business Studies (with marketing), but after a few years of working she had become disillusioned with her career path:

'I was getting to a point in my life where I was bored and despondent with work: I wasn't using my degree, I was doing a job for the sake of doing it.'

Matters were taken out of Bina's hands, when the company she was working offered her voluntary redundancy:
'I spent this time thinking about what I really wanted. I had always been interested in psychology, so I used my redundancy to fund a short course of study in Vancouver, and a graduate diploma in psychology, which was enough for the MSc at Birkbeck.'

Since starting the MSc, Bina has not looked back. In the first year of the course, she found a job she enjoys, in HR for Transport for London, and she has been able to afford to buy her own place.

So what advice does she have to anyone thinking of starting over?

'It is not always easy but, with a strong network of people around, you will get through. Keep your eyes on the end goal. The MSc has been such a valuable journey, both personally and socially. I have really proved something to myself.'
