Qualitative 'Methods in Action' day: Tuesday 23 May 2017

We are delighted to invite you to a Qualitative 'Methods in Action' day event, hosted by Birkbeck's Department of Organizational Psychology Qualitative Research Group.
The day will feature a mix of presentations and panel discussions by academic staff, current and recently completed PhD students from the department. The theme will be exploring the participant / researcher relationship in qualitative research.
We are also delighted to announce that the keynote address will be given by Professor Bill Lee at the University of Sheffield Management School. He has published widely on topics across management, accounting and related disciplines. He is associate editor for Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management (QROM) and of the European Management Review (EMR). At EMR he has established a new section, 'Methodology Matters', which provides a peer-reviewed outlet for articles that make a methodological contribution.
In addition to our keynote by Professor Bill Lee, there will be the following presentations which will cover a wide range of different qualitative methods:
Dr Almuth McDowall: "Standing firm and standing tall - the intricacies of presenting commissioned qualitative research"
Jane Setten: "The Participant/Researcher Relationship in a Longitudinal Multi-Case Study"
Paula Fitzgerald: 'Shared lived-experiences enmesh: exploring the impact of the research journey on the researcher as an insider'
Dr Susan Kahn: 'The researcher as parasite: Feasting on the flesh of the host organisation'
Dr Rebecca Whiting: 'An invisible friend? How video technology mediates the participant/researcher relationship in a participatory video study'
The day will also feature a series of 'three minute methods tasters' on the topic of the gig economy, plus a panel discussion with the speakers:
Starting an interview: Dr Kate Mackenzie Davey
Narrative analysis: Helen Cooper
Focus groups: Jamie Priestley
Indigenous methods: Dr Vanessa Iwowo
Internet data: Christine Brown
Psycho-analytic method: Mark Stringer
The presenters will also take part in an audience Q&A at the end of the day
Our aim is to deliver an informal overview of some of the innovative or less traditional methods (including longitudinal and visual approaches) that are currently being used in the qualitative research undertaken in the department. There will be plenty of opportunity to talk to staff and PhD students about their work and to find out more about these methods and what these can contribute to knowledge and understanding in organizational and management research.
