Welcome to the new academic year for students

Professor David Latchman, Master of Birkbeck, offers his personal welcome to new and returning students.

Master of Birkbeck, Professor David Latchman, has offered a warm welcome to students who are starting and returning to their courses.

He said: “It is with great pleasure that I welcome all the new students who are joining Birkbeck and embarking on their studies this academic year, and welcome back those who are continuing with their courses, qualifications and research.

“Birkbeck is a university like no other. We offer everyone the opportunity to fit their university study around all those other things which occupy their time, whether family lives or work. For some of you, this will be a return to education after a lengthy gap; for an increasing number, this will be your next step from school or sixth form. This may be a chance you thought you may never have and you will seize it with relish. We understand there will be excitement and some trepidation as you enter a new part of your lives, expand your horizons and embrace new opportunities in your social lives and your careers.

“At Birkbeck we want you to get the most out of your time with us. We recognise that you have many and varied commitments, and our teams will be able to offer the intellectual and pastoral support you need to achieve your goals.

“I wish you well and hope you enjoy your studies, your new friendships and the world that will open up for you. And of course I hope you graduate with the qualification that will help you in your future lives.”
