Welcome to the new academic year

Read a welcome message from the Master of Birkbeck, Professor David Latchman.

Students on the Birkbeck, Malet Street campus as the College welcomes new students.

A new academic year begins this week, with around 10,000 students set to join or return to Birkbeck for their studies. Professor David Latchman, Master of the College, has welcomed new and returning students with a message.

He said: “It’s wonderful to welcome all the new students who are joining Birkbeck this year and to welcome back those who are continuing with their studies here after the summer break.

“Some of you will be joining us straight from school, from different parts of the country or world; many of you will have decided to embark on a degree later in life, or after a long break from studying. All of you are welcome.

“Birkbeck is unique. It is the only UK university to offer all its teaching in the evening, giving students the opportunity to fit their studies around all the other parts of their lives, whether that means work, family or other responsibilities. Managing your studies with your varied other commitments is not always easy, but our teams are always on hand to offer the intellectual and pastoral support you need to achieve your goals.

“I hope you enjoy your time here and that you get the most out of your time at Birkbeck, your new friendships and the opportunity to learn from our world-class academic staff.”
